Heritage Nigeria: Green plaque Initiative

Institutional Authority and Cultural Guardianship: The Role of the NCAC

The Nigerian Green Plaque Initiative, founded by Ifeanyi O. Asiodu of The Hospitality Consortium (THC), represents a definitive step towards safeguarding Nigeria’s historical landscape. At the intersection of heritage preservation and real estate advisory, this programme relies on strict historical accuracy and institutional credibility.

To ensure the utmost integrity of the initiative, THC has formally partnered with the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), which serves as the apex statutory body responsible for receiving, evaluating, and authenticating all Green Plaque nominations.

The Central Receiving and Vetting Authority

As the official custodian of Nigeria’s cultural legacy, the NCAC plays an indispensable role in the Green Plaque lifecycle. While THC provides the commercial structuring and feasibility expertise required to integrate these sites into sustainable Greenfield developments or adaptive-reuse Brownfield refurbishments, the NCAC acts as the definitive historical gatekeeper.

When historians, families, traditional institutions, and local communities submit a site for consideration, the NCAC undertakes a rigorous evaluation process. Their mandate includes:

  • Historical Authentication: Conducting thorough research to verify the dates, personalities, and historical events associated with the nominated asset.
  • Cultural Significance Assessment: Determining the broader impact of the site on Nigeria’s collective identity, categorising it accurately within architectural, colonial, or indigenous contexts.
  • Official Ratification: Granting formal governmental recognition to approved sites, ensuring that every Green Plaque installed carries undeniable cultural authority.

A Strategic Public-Private Partnership

The vision established by THC prioritises a collaborative approach to heritage conservation. By entrusting the nomination and vetting process to the NCAC, The Hospitality Consortium ensures that the initiative remains deeply rooted in institutional legitimacy.

This partnership guarantees that as we identify assets for potential commercial viability or long-term preservation, we do so with the full backing of Nigeria’s premier cultural institution. The NCAC’s oversight ensures that every Green Plaque awarded is not merely a marker on a building, but a formally recognised national monument designed to inspire and educate future generations.
